The BMW minivan is here. What a time to be alive.

Is it me or does that look a little too much like a Merc B-Class?
With a little Fiat Multipla mixed in?

I'm not opposed to the idea of a BMW minivan. But it should be a BMW minivan instead of a milquetoast minivan that happens to have a badge and kidneys.
The R class was a proper Mercedes minivan. It was large, comfortable, tank-like and came with big engines. The R class was cool. This thing sucks.

We can get the M edition right?

Great, as if Minivan drivers weren't bad enough.

The R Class was much more expensive and aimed at a different market. Plus it didn't sell.

Why do these things never have sliding doors?? When I have kids, I'd love to have this car as an option, but the sliding doors are so much better for kids and babies.
GIVE ME SLIDING DOORS.

I know. But that wasn't the point I made. I stated that it was a proper Mercedes take on the minivan and I used it as an example that vehicle type does not need to dilute brand image.
This BMW is not a proper BMW minivan and therefore dilutes the brand image. If it had rear wheel drive, a straight six and offered sheer driving pleasure, then it would be a proper BMW minivan and not dilute the brand.

Maybe so, but BMW are in the business of selling cars. Many of those buying the likes of the 1 series think it's fwd anyway so they might as well make fwd cars. Not many people (at least in Europe where this model is mainly aimed) buy six cylinder BMWs so they might as well make fours and diesel ones at that.
It's like Porsche and the Cayenne. Is it a traditional Porsche? No. Does it sell? Yes, it's their big money spinner. Doesn't prevent them making 911 GT3s and so on.

I'm not talking money or economics. I only mentioned brand image. I have no idea why you seem focussed on disagreeing with me.

...because I don't think it will affect their brand image, any more than Porsche's making of the Cayenne did.
Six cylinder engines, rwd and so on might be what some people think of as fundamental to the BMW brand, but their sales wouldn't seem to support this. After all BMW started making their name in the 1960s and the 1970s with what were frequently four cylinder cars and they had no trouble cultivating a certain image which they still trade on. You could even argue that the 1602-2002 Touring models were the forerunners on the Active Tourer (and the similarity in names probably isn't a coincidence either).
